So, you may be asking yourself, “why should I go to the conference this year?” I can help you answer that question. I will tell you that the education is terrific. We have top notch presenters and have I mentioned our keynote and plenary speakers are worth coming for all on their own?
If you’ve not followed the PFAS saga (what rock are you living under?), you may not realize the Rob Bilott of Taft Law will be our keynote speaker on Wednesday morning, September 10th. He is the lawyer who successfully litigated against DuPont for PFAS contamination. For those who are playing “catch up” on this topic, we are hosting a movie night showing the story of Rob’s initiation into PFAS issues called Dark Waters. It’s actually a movie – not a documentary - and is so well done that I watched it twice in a weekend. This is included with your registration and is Tuesday evening's entertainment.
Beyond the educational opportunities, and most important to me, is the networking and camaraderie. The Kentuckiana Chapter of Hazardous Materials Managers (KCHMM) has a saying that we are all CHUMS (aka CHMMs). This is true of the entire organization! Unlike many industry associations, our group is not cliquish. We are welcoming to all newcomers and love to introduce folks around and make them welcome. So if you’re worried you won’t know anyone there, you need not worry. You will have friends from the moment you enter the door. It’s such a great opportunity to meet old friends and establish new friendships. This is the one time of year that I can vent about things that have happened in my business and have colleagues who truly understand my frustrations, challenges and opportunities. I always come away with a deeper relationship with at least one person and usually several. These relationships have enhanced my personal development and continue to help me in my career.
So if you already have too many business colleagues and friends, then maybe you can stay home. The rest of us – come on down and become a CHUM!
You may be saying that you can’t be a CHUM since you’re not a certified CHMM. Not so! We welcome anyone at any stage of their EHS journey. You may find new opportunities to further your career by becoming certified but it is certainly not a pre-requisite.
Have I mentioned that we study hard and we party hard? We are a social organization as well as scholarly. In the evenings, we have lots of opportunities to visit some of the terrific restaurants that Louisville is known for (we have the most chef-owned restaurants per capita in the country). Have I mentioned that we have lots of bourbon too? The week of the conference is also the Bourbon Festival. So come early and get a head start on the party. In case you’re registering too late to get into one of the Bourbon Festival events, we still have some openings for our Bourbon & Bats event (spouses welcome). Check out the conference registration for more details.
I would be remiss in my duties if I didn’t mention our next opportunity for attending the virtual Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management Course (EHMM). Once per year, AHMP sponsors a 10 week course spanning 47 chapters of content and 33 contact hours of training. This year's training course will be held on Wednesday evenings 6PM (EDT) – 9:30 PM (EDT) beginning September 17, 2025. Training is conducted by fellow CHMMs who are subject-matter experts. Generally the courses are recorded just in case you can’t attend, but this is a live Zoom class. Feel free to call or email me if you’d like to get more information at (812) 945-1541 or [email protected]. You can register online for the course at www.ahmpnet.org. There is no pre-requisite to attend this course and there is no test. It is, however, a great study companion as you prepare to take the CHMM exam and will definitely help you on your journey to certification. By the way – if the timing is not right for you to attend, chapters usually hold EHMM courses throughout the year. Bookmark the AHMP website and visit regularly for updates.
That’s it in a nutshell. Come to the Conference. Sign up for the EHMM course. Come say hi when you join us at EHS HazMat Summit 2025 in Louisville, Kentucky.
I look forward to meeting you in person!
Jennifer Koenig, CHMM AHMP Treasurer

EHMM Night School
Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management (EHMM) 10 Week Course September 17 – November 19, 2025 Wednesdays from 6:00 - 9:30 PM EDT/EST
For the past several years, AHMP has hosted a virtual Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management course in the Fall. This will be presented (live) via the Zoom Platform with ability to interact with the instructors and fellow students. The course consists of topics divided into ten segments that are 3 to 3.5 hours long, which helps students to have less overload and more fully absorb the materials.
The EHMM training curriculum aligns directly with the current AHMP Desk Reference (4th Edition) and a complimentary electronic copy of the Desk Reference is included with your EHMM course registration.
We are offering an optional quiz link after you’ve completed the course. These questions are designed to help you identify the (post EHMM course) topics in which you’re competent and those for which you may need additional study prior to taking the CHMM exam.
The course will be taught by several trainers who are subject matter experts and have vast knowledge about the topics they will be teaching. With a variety of trainers, it should keep the course lively and interesting.
While not specifically a pre-exam preparatory course, it is certainly a great way to prepare in advance of the CHMM or CHMP exam. For those who already hold certification to the CHMM, PE, PG or other credential, this course is a great way to stay current with your career field and get 2.4 CEUs in a short period of time. If you’ve not been in the environmental field very long – this is a great way to get an overview of those areas in which you aren’t currently experienced. There is no required test at the end of this course so it’s low stress.
If you’re unsure if this is a suitable course for you, please contact our EHMM course facilitator, Jennifer Koenig at (812) 945-1541 or [email protected].

What is an AHMP Distinguished Lecturer?
The AHMP Distinguished Lecturer roster is a list of vetted hazardous materials subject matter experts that are willing to share their expertise with follow AHMP members.
The program has been designed with you in mind – whether as an AHMP Chapter Leader, a subject matter expert, or as an event attendee. As an AHMP Chapter Leader, the DLs are available to you as a resource to enrich Chapter meetings and provide CMP hours to attendees. As a subject matter expert, you can apply with the AHMP Professional Development Committee to become a DL and get your name and subject matter on the roster. This will get your credentials in front of the AHMP membership and provide opportunities to share your experience and knowledge in a beneficial way. As an event attendee, knowing that the presenter has been pre-vetted and is distinctly qualified to present the information, leaves you with confidence that the information you are receiving is cutting edge and first in class.
We encourage you to check out the AHMP DL website to see what it takes to be included on the roster, or reach out to those who are currently on the roster to see how they might contribute to your next meeting.
